FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How is coaching different from mentoring, consulting and counseling?
Mentorship seeks to help someone do what the mentor does, in similar ways that he or she does it.
Consulting focuses on solving problems and seeks to provide information, expertise, advice and strategies to solve them.
Counseling and therapy are valuable processes that help many move forward by resolving the pain and traumas of the past. However, while we will talk about the process of moving through painful times in our Joy focuses, this is not the primary purpose of coaching nor of Grace Spaces.
Professional Christian life coaching is present/future focused. Individual coaching asks catalytic questions that foster greater awareness of your unique strengths, vulnerabilities and the obstacles you’re encountering. It empowers you to partner with the Holy Spirit in creating strategies that fit who you’re created to be and make new choices in how you want to move forward.
Group Coaching works on the same principles as individual coaching, except that we share a common focus as a team each week. Our focus is presented in the weekly videos prior to our sessions, but our time together is spent considering key questions and dialogue that allows you to connect the dots with the Holy Spirit for yourself and make choices that align best with how He has created you to overcome.

Why is payment a donation to a Christian non-profit of good works?
Investing in the care of others is a ministry that has eternal value (Matthew 25:44-45, Matthew 22:36-40).
I’ve had those who have invested generously into my life with their time and resources and am in a season where my passion is to give as freely as God has given to me.
I also value the importance of investing good seed into the people and places God has given us a heart for, as well as investing in our own process of maturity to be good ambassadors of God’s true nature in those places.
That’s what you’re doing with your donation!
My prayer is that your financial investment into your development and into the lives of others will return a beautiful harvest not only in this lifetime, but for all eternity.
Being able to contribute to your journey and story with God allows me to share in that harvest as well. How cool is that?

Why does Allison primarily coach only women?
Regarding coaching, there are two primary reasons: experience and priorities.
First, being a woman professionally, in ministry and in life is what I know best.
Second, I have chosen to work with small groups of people, investing more deeply and personally in their lives.
I’ve also chosen to make coaching part of my life, not all of my life. Friendships, family, writing and exploring with Jesus are also important to me.
Prioritizing these values means I have limited space available for coaching anyway, so refining my focus seemed wise.
Any gatherings at which I am invited to speak are of course open to whomever the organizers have invited.
We have also added a Book Club and at least one Navigating Grace Spaces each year that is open to both men and women.

What is Allison's professional training as a life coach?
I’m a Certified Professional Life Coach (CPLC) through Christian Coach Institute* with 80 hours of ICF (International Coaching Federation) approved coach specific training hours, 7 group mentor hours and many hours of professional coaching experience. ICF is considered the gold standard of training in the coaching profession.
I have a B.A. in Psychology from Biola University, with an emphasis in neurobiology and M.S. Clinical Psychology training from California State University Fullerton.
My California Teaching Credential is from Fresno Pacific University and I worked in education for 20 years. Along with several other certifications, I received specialized training in Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences.
I’ve also had the life experience of being the Director of Leadership Development for Aglow Prison Ministry for 12 years, training volunteer and inmate leadership teams. In my decade of itinerant ministry and leadership consulting, I encountered the joys and challenges that pastors, organization leaders and members face in ministry.

Does allison ever speak at live events?
Yes! I’ve loved the many years of traveling to communities, getting to know the people in them and ministering through teaching and encouragement.
Just recently, I’ve felt that it’s time once again to open that door and consider a limited number of in-person gatherings.
So, if you are interested in having me come and share any of the Grace Spaces focuses with your community, I’d be happy to have a conversation about it. If you have another focus, I’ll be happy to consider that as well.
I don’t have a set fee. Email me at admin@gracespaces.org and we can discuss the possibilities.
